It all started when…

SCOTT

Cephas Norman Scott qualified as a Surveyor in 1910 Upon qualification Cephas worked for the Public Works Department in Sydney and then in the Gloucester District where, among other things, he surveyed land for camping grounds and reserves. Cephas returned from Government service in 1921 and moved to Maitland where he acquired the practices of William Foster and Rue Bergin which covered a great deal of the Hunter Valley and the Gloucester District. Cephas spent a lot of time in World War 2 on Army assignments mapping the area around Kyogle, Woodenbong, Mt Barney and across the Queensland border to Beaudesert. Cephas was made a Fellow of the Institution of Surveyors in 1923. He died in 1972.

CRISP

In 1950 Walter Jack Crisp joined the practice and the firm became known as Cephas N Scott & Crisp. Jack Crisp began training with the Lands Department in Sydney before enlisting in the Australian Army where he was shipped to the Middle East on the liner the Queen Mary with the Australian Railway Survey Co. He carried out survey and design of an important rail line in southern Lebanon. Upon his return to Australia in 1943 Jack transferred to the RAAF as a navigator and was sent to Canada with the Empire Training Scheme. After his discharge from the Army in 1945 Jack worked in Sydney, Taree and Wagga Wagga before joining Cephas Scott in partnership. Jack was made a Fellow of the Institution of Surveyors in 1981. He died in 2001.

DILLEY

As a teenager Ray Dilley who Started surveying with Scott, Crisp Maitland as a trainee in the 70’s, remained a devoted employee of Scott, Crisp and the Maitland Community working with them and through structural changes until he took the reins and added he’s name in 2001. Ray has been an integral part of surveying in the Maitland and wider Hunter Valley community through his many years servicing the area. Ray sadly passed away in January 2019.

WILLS

In 2015 the current owner Craig Wills took over the business with Ray Dilley staying on part time. Craig has worked with Ray Dilley since 2008 and has gained extensive knowledge over the last 12 years both in the surveying industry in NSW and in the local region. He specialises in Detail Surveys for building and other designs, Torrens and Strata Subdivisions, Building Set Outs, as well as all other aspects of Land surveying. Craig has a Bachelor of Spatial Science (Hons) with a major in Surveying from the University of Southern Queensland. Craig is a Registered Surveyor and a current member of the NSW Institute of Surveyors.
